Safety with a modern twist

When pipe wholesaler Hoberg & Driesch Sweden looked to renovate their offices, they needed an evacuation staircase that combined high levels of safety with modern design. With Weland’s JOS spiral staircase, they got a solution that both enhances the property and is compliant with ambitious sustainability requirements.

Hoberg & Driesch Sweden is part of German family-owned company Hoberg & Driesch Group – Europe’s largest stockist of steel pipes, with 18 subsidiaries in 11 countries. The Halmstad-based Swedish division has undergone unprecedented growth. Rapid expansion of the business over the past three years, coupled with a commensurate significant increase in staff numbers, has created a need for more space.
Property owner Mileway has further developed the existing premises, transforming the unfurnished upper floor into a modern and functional office environment. The evacuation staircase from Weland ensures the presence of a safe evacuation route.

A flexible system

When building contractor Jonas Magnusson was given the task of finding a suitable evacuation staircase, he had no real expectation of coming up with anything over and above the traditional standard solutions.
– Evacuation staircases are rarely the most attractive feature of a project, but here we found a solution that both had visual appeal and stayed within reasonable cost limits, says Magnusson.

He makes a particular point of highlighting the flexibility of the system, which enables the railing to be adapted with different infill panel, handrail, and colour options. In this instance, railing infill Slit was chosen and integrated into a protective cage that increases the safety and accessibility in the staircase.

Low weight – reduced environmental impact

During development of the JOS spiral staircase, Weland placed great emphasis on minimising the environmental impact of the staircase for the duration of its service life. Low material consumption, combined with a design that delivers a staircase with a lower weight than traditional steel stairs, make manufacturing less energy-intensive. In fact, the carbon footprint of the staircase is 48% below the limit value set by the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning for hot-dip galvanized steel staircases. The low weight makes the installation process much easier and faster than is the case for a traditional spiral staircase.

– The installation and collaboration with Weland worked seamlessly. In fact, it worked so well that we ordered another staircase for the next project without hesitation, concludes Magnusson.
