Millimetre precision in a complex energy facility

The plant in Åmål is operated by Statkraft Värme, generating fossil-free district heating for companies, commercial properties, and homes. When the decision was taken to extend the facility with the addition of a new biofuel boiler and ORC turbine, it came with a set of stringent demands that required a well-thought-out operation and maintenance solution. Several parts of the system needed to be safely accessible for servicing at height – not least the some 16-metre tall boiler.

Safe access on many levels
The project was a joint effort between Saxwerk, which supplied key parts of the facility’s process equipment, and Weland, which provided platforms, 15 staircases, and a gangway that together provide access to eight different levels.
– Millimetre precision was essential. Everything needed to be adapted to meet operational requirements – the boiler, smoke ducts, and other parts in the facility. Nothing could be too high or too low, says Operations Manager Henrik Niesel.

The installation work was carried out in parallel in several levels and the drawing documentation was subject to some incredibly stringent demands. In addition, the new building also needed to be integrated with part of the existing plant system.

Long term collaboration
Weland and Saxwerk have worked together on projects for many years and are well-versed in working on projects with similar criteria. At the same time, the Åmål district heating plant project represented one of the largest assignments Weland had worked on.
– We have a well-established collaboration with Weland, particularly the design department, where we often find ourselves working with the same people. This consistency creates a sense of security and efficiency that permeates the entire process. Their responsive approach to quotes is also an important success factor, as it allows us to get the right calculation from day one, says Olof Eriksson, Design Engineer at Saxwerk.

For Henrik Niesel, the result is clear – a solution that works in practice, is used daily, and which he is also happy with.
