Six new EPDs provide clearer climate data

Weland was an early adopter of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its products. Today, EPDs are an established part of the company’s sustainability efforts. As the validity period of the previous declarations now comes to an end, Weland is taking its work a step further by developing six new product-specific EPDs.

An EPD provides a documented assessment of a product’s environmental impact and serves as a third-party verified basis for climate calculations in the construction industry. By reporting climate data for different product groups, it becomes easier for stakeholders in the construction and property sectors to make informed material choices at an early stage of the building process.

“It is important to create transparency and give customers the opportunity to track a product’s environmental impact, from raw materials to the finished product. Our products are made from steel that can be recycled and used as raw material in new products,” says Mattias Andersson, Marketing and Sustainability Manager at Weland AB.

Climate Data for Six Product Groups
The six new EPDs cover spiral staircases, straight staircases, sectional railings, ramps, grating and anti-slip grating. Hot-dip galvanising is included in the manufacturing process, and the climate impact is reported using, among other indicators, the key figure GWP-total A1–A3. This covers emissions from raw materials, transportation and manufacturing.

For example, the GWP-total A1–A3 value for Weland’s spiral staircases is 2.09 tonnes of CO₂e per tonne of product, compared with 2.24 tonnes for grating and 2.14 tonnes of CO₂e per tonne of product for sectional railings.

Demand for verified climate data is increasing as more companies need to report their climate impact for sustainability reporting, procurement processes and internal climate targets.

“We clearly see that the requirements for climate data are increasing, and we continuously work to improve the quality of our calculations. Having more product-specific Environmental Product Declarations also gives us a better basis for our ongoing sustainability efforts. Our goal is to reduce the climate impact of the products we manufacture,” says Mattias Andersson.
