Corten steel grating creates a natural expression in Trelleborg City Park

Axel Ebbe’s Art Hall in Trelleborg was built in 1935 and is a clean-lined functionalist building constructed in brick, natural stone and concrete. Following a careful renovation and extension, the art hall has been naturally integrated with Trelleborg City Park. Paving, decking and Corten steel grating from Weland give the area a varied and interesting character.

Trelleborgs Industri- & byggservice, TIBAB, has collaborated with Weland on many previous projects, so it came as no surprise that Weland’s steel grating was specified in the drawings for the pedestrian bridge and walkway. The A-Flex Corten steel grating was custom-sized to fit the steel structures designed by TIBAB – a total of 63 m² of grating.

Choosing Corten steel was a deliberate decision by Liljewall Arkitekter, who were commissioned to design the new facility and connect the art hall with the city park through a new walkway.
– The Corten steel in the grating and the lightness created by the elegant mesh openings were chosen to allow the material to blend in with the natural materials in the planting. This creates a seamless transition between the iron oxides of the grating, the soil, bark and greenery, explains landscape architect Frans Gillberg.

The grating is placed directly on the ground, allowing sunlight to reach the undergrowth, which has been left completely untouched. Over time, vegetation will be able to grow up between the grating panels.
– The Corten steel grating really fits beautifully into the surroundings and adds an interesting dimension to this part of the park. It will be exciting to see how it develops as the vegetation grows over time, says Ola Nilson Lundin, museum director at Axel Ebbe’s Art Hall.

Anders Johansson, CEO of TIBAB, also highlights how well the collaboration has worked, both in terms of the materials and the dialogue with Weland.
– Working with Weland is always straightforward and reliable, from the initial sales contact through to delivery. Weland delivers every time, says Anders.

The city park is a green oasis in the heart of Trelleborg, and the renovation of the art hall has also given the park a new entrance plaza where activities can extend outdoors to welcome visitors.
– Through Axel Ebbe’s art, we can see that he was a great dreamer. I envision the art hall and the park becoming a place where we can all dream, big and freely, concludes Ola Nilson Lundin.
