Weland’s JOS Spiral Staircase – Developed for More Sustainable Construction
– Much of the development in our industry takes place through collaboration between architects, the construction industry and suppliers. When the industry faces new challenges, we as suppliers need to be there to help – sometimes with entirely new products and solutions. Our new JOS spiral staircase is a good example of this, says Mattias Andersson, Marketing and Sustainability Manager at Weland AB.
The construction industry is constantly evolving. Everything from building design to the choice of materials and products is influenced by regulations and requirements relating to energy efficiency, climate impact, safety and accessibility. The focus is on building sustainably and for the long term, and the responsibility lies not only with architects and construction companies, but also with suppliers.
As sustainability requirements become increasingly stringent, it is becoming more important to be able to demonstrate how products affect the environment throughout their entire life cycle. Environmental Product Declarations, known as EPDs, have therefore become an important tool in the industry.
Environmental Product Declaration
– We have EPDs for many of our products, making it easy for architects and construction professionals to access information about their climate impact. At the same time, we are constantly working in line with the direction the industry is heading, so that we can offer the products and solutions that are needed. That is exactly what we had in mind when developing the JOS spiral staircase, says Mattias Andersson.
A Classic Spiral Staircase in a New Design
– One of our goals when developing the staircase was to achieve as low an environmental impact as possible. By rethinking almost every aspect of its design and production, we succeeded, says Jakob Josefsson, Product Developer at Weland.
One of the ways material consumption was reduced was by forming the steps and balustrade infill from the same sheet metal. This makes the staircase 30% lighter and gives it a 48% lower climate impact than a traditional steel spiral staircase.
– You could say that it is a classic spiral staircase in a new design, says Jakob Josefsson.
A major advantage for those installing the staircase is that installation is considerably faster than that of a traditional spiral staircase.
– Installation time has been cut in half, and the process is also safer because the JOS spiral staircase can be installed from inside the staircase itself. This is a major and important advantage when it comes to creating a safe working environment, says Jakob Josefsson.

The best solutions are found through collaboration between architects, the construction industry, property owners, installers and those who develop products and solutions.
– We want to be part of that collaboration. We are committed to developing products that are sustainable, both in terms of a long service life and a low climate impact. Those are exactly the characteristics of the JOS spiral staircase,” says Mattias Andersson.
